The printer can also get confused if the Preferences are changed, that is, if you use a different shortcut from the previous selection and "something" about the paper is different. No, I am not aware that this is a feature that can be switched off. Even opening the tray can result in the printer wanting to know what is happening. The printer wants you to tell the printer control panel about the paper size / type each time you add / change paper in the printer. Yes, I realize you likely do not actually pick up the printer and shake it - it was just the way I read the text the first time. I have never heard of adjusting the paper size / type by shaking the printer.
